# What does basic health insurance cover at the dentist?
Children under 18 are entitled to full dental care through basic health insurance. For adults over 18, coverage is more limited: the basic package only covers specific necessary procedures.

## What does the basic package cover for children?

Check-ups, X-rays, fillings, dental cleaning and extractions are fully covered by basic insurance for children under 18. Orthodontic treatment is also covered if the dental misalignment is medically necessary (IOTN score 4 or 5).

## What does the basic package cover for adults?

For adults, basic insurance only covers surgical dentistry (such as a complex extraction), dental prosthetics and dental care in specific medical conditions. Routine check-ups, fillings, crowns and implants are not covered by basic insurance.

## When do you need supplementary insurance?

If you are over 18 and visit the dentist regularly, supplementary dental insurance is almost always worthwhile. Most supplementary packages cover check-ups, X-rays, fillings and dental prosthetics up to an annual maximum.

## What about the deductible?

Dental care for adults generally does not count towards the compulsory deductible. Only when reimbursed through basic insurance (such as jaw surgery) does it apply. Check-ups and fillings via supplementary insurance fall outside the deductible.
