# When should my child see an orthodontist?
A dentist will refer your child to the orthodontist if there are signs of misaligned teeth or abnormal jaw growth. But as a parent you can also recognise signs yourself that warrant a consultation.

## When does a dentist refer to the orthodontist?
Severe overbite or underbite- Deep bite where the lower teeth are fully covered- Crossbite where upper and lower teeth bite alongside each other- Crowding in the jaw preventing teeth from erupting correctly- Teeth that do not erupt in the right position (impaction)
## At what age does orthodontic treatment start?

For most children, orthodontic treatment begins between the ages of 10 and 14, when the mixed dentition is complete. Some corrections, such as widening the jaw, are started earlier (6 to 10 years). A first screening with the orthodontist is worthwhile from age 8.

## How long does treatment take?

A full orthodontic treatment with fixed braces takes an average of 18 to 30 months, depending on complexity. This is followed by a retention phase to prevent relapse.

## What does orthodontics cost for children?

Children under 18 are entitled to reimbursement from basic insurance if the dental misalignment is medically necessary (IOTN score 4 or 5). Your dentist or orthodontist determines the IOTN score.
