# Braces or aligners: pros and cons for your child
Fixed braces and aligners are both effective methods for straightening teeth. Which treatment is the best fit depends on the age, dental pattern and motivation of your child.

## What are fixed braces?

Fixed braces consist of brackets bonded to the teeth and connected by a wire. The braces cannot be removed by your child. This makes the treatment predictable: the result does not depend on how consistently the braces are worn.

## What are aligners?

Aligners are clear plastic trays that are barely visible. Your child switches trays every one to two weeks. They are removable, which makes brushing easier. But for a good result they need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. That requires discipline.

## When does each treatment apply?

For younger children (8 to 12 years) who are still in the mixed dentition phase, a removable appliance is sometimes used as preparation. Fixed braces are the standard for more complex corrections. Aligners are particularly suitable for teenagers and adults with mild to moderate misalignment who value an aesthetic advantage.

## What does health insurance cover?

Orthodontic treatment for children under 18 is covered by basic insurance when medically necessary (IOTN score 4 or 5). The coverage applies to both fixed braces and aligners with an accredited orthodontist. Over the age of 18, orthodontics falls under supplementary insurance only.
