# Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment has an undeservedly bad reputation. With modern techniques and anesthesia, the procedure is much more comfortable than expected and saves your tooth from extraction.

## How does root canal treatment work?

We guide you step by step through the entire process.
1
### Assessment and X-ray

The dentist or endodontologist examines the tooth and uses an X-ray to assess the extent of the infection and the shape of the root canals.
2
### Anaesthesia and access

The tooth is anaesthetised. A small opening is then made in the tooth surface to gain access to the root canals.
3
### Removal of the dental nerve

The infected or damaged dental nerve is completely removed.
4
### Cleaning and shaping

The canals are carefully cleaned, disinfected and shaped to ensure complete removal of bacteria.
5
### Sealing and restoration

The canals are hermetically sealed. The tooth is covered with a filling or crown for long-term restoration.

## When do you need a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is performed when the dental nerve has become inflamed or infected. This can cause symptoms you should not ignore:

Persistent, throbbing toothache that does not go away on its own. Pain when biting or chewing on the affected tooth. Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, even after the stimulus has gone. Swelling or a pimple on the gum around the tooth. Dark discolouration of the tooth.

Do you recognise one or more of these symptoms? Make an appointment. The sooner an infection is treated, the greater the chance that the tooth can be saved.
